FAQ

Questions about this tool

What is the difference between HSL and HSV?

Both describe color as hue, saturation and a third component, but HSL's "lightness" and HSV's "value" are calculated differently — HSV's value represents brightness more directly, which is why it's common in color-picker UIs, while HSL is more common in CSS.

Why is CMYK read-only?

CMYK (used for print) doesn't map perfectly one-to-one back to RGB (used for screens) without assumptions about ink and paper, so this tool shows a standard CMYK approximation calculated from your RGB value rather than accepting CMYK as a direct input.

What does the WCAG contrast badge mean?

It shows whether your color has enough contrast against white or black text to meet WCAG accessibility guidelines — AA requires a ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text (3:1 for large text), and AAA requires 7:1.

Does the eyedropper work in every browser?

The screen eyedropper uses the native EyeDropper API, currently supported in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium-based browsers — the button is hidden automatically in browsers that don't support it, like Firefox and Safari.
