Hash Generator

Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 hashes from text or a file to verify integrity.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use

Hash Generator in 3 steps

Choose text or file

Type text directly, or drop a file to hash — handy for verifying a download matches its published checksum.

Pick your algorithms

Tick any combination of MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512.

Generate and compare

Click Generate hashes and copy any result to compare against a published checksum.

Features

Why use this Hash Generator

Four widely-used algorithms: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512.
Hash text directly, or an entire file to verify a download.
One-click copy for each hash, ready to compare against a published value.
All hashing happens locally with CryptoJS — files are never uploaded.
FAQ

Questions about this tool

Which algorithm should I use?

SHA-256 is the current standard for most integrity-checking purposes. MD5 and SHA-1 are still widely published by download sites for legacy compatibility but are considered cryptographically broken for security purposes — fine for checking accidental corruption, not for security guarantees.

How do I verify a downloaded file?

Hash the downloaded file here and compare the result character-for-character against the checksum published by the file's source — if they match exactly, the file was not corrupted or tampered with in transit.

Why do I get a different hash for the same text with a trailing space?

Hash functions are extremely sensitive to input — even a single extra space, newline, or character produces a completely different hash, which is exactly what makes them useful for detecting any change.

Can this hash very large files?

Yes, up to 100MB, though very large files take a moment longer since the entire file must be read and processed in your browser before hashing.
