FAQ

Questions about this tool

What is a Base64 data URI used for?

It lets you embed an image directly inside HTML, CSS or JSON as text instead of linking to a separate file — handy for small icons, email templates, or inlining assets to reduce HTTP requests.

Does Base64 encoding make the file bigger?

Yes, Base64 text is roughly 33% larger than the original binary file, since it represents binary data using only readable text characters.

Can I paste just the Base64 characters without the "data:image/png;base64," prefix?

Yes — if no data URI prefix is detected, this tool assumes PNG image data and adds the prefix automatically before decoding.

Is there a file size limit?

Very large images produce very long Base64 strings that can be slow for browsers and text editors to handle, so this tool works best with images under about 20MB.
