Image to Text

Extract editable text from a printed English document or screenshot, directly in your browser.

Extract printed English text from JPG, PNG or WEBP images. Best with a sharp, upright photograph. Handwriting and complex layouts may give poor results. Recognition files download on first use; your image is processed locally.

How to use this tool

Choose an image, press Extract text, then correct any recognition mistakes before copying or downloading. For a scanned PDF, first use PDF to JPG and process each page image here. For selectable PDF text, use PDF to Text.

Practical example

See Extract text from a photographed page for a worked example and the checks to make before using your result.

A quick check for important text

Imagine photographing a printed bill with an account number and payment date. Upload one sharp, upright image, extract the text, then compare the recognised result with the original line by line. Pay special attention to 0 versus O, 1 versus I, punctuation, currency amounts and dates. Do not use an unreviewed recognition result for a payment or formal application.

Choose the right starting file

This tool works on JPG, PNG and WebP images up to 10 MB and recognises printed English. It cannot preserve a two-column layout as a table, reliably read handwriting, or verify what a blurred word was meant to say. Take another photo if the text is faint or skewed. A scanned PDF can be converted page by page with PDF to JPG; a PDF with selectable text is better handled by PDF to Text. The first use downloads recognition files, so an internet connection may be needed even though the image is processed in your browser.

Edit the output before copying or downloading it. Keep the original image until you have checked all names, numbers and lines that matter. See the photo-to-text guide for preparation tips.
